Groundwater Assessment in India: CGWB Framework

India extracts more groundwater than any country — 249 billion m³ annually, accounting for 63% of irrigation and 85% of drinking water. CGWB classifies 6,965 groundwater units as safe, semi-critical, critical, or over-exploited. 1,186 units are over-exploited (2022 assessment).

Assessment Methodology

The tool follows CGWB GEC-2015 norms for recharge estimation, BIS IS 15792 for artificial recharge feasibility, and IS 10500:2012 for water quality. It evaluates aquifer transmissivity, storativity, specific yield, and safe yield calculations.

Regulatory Requirements

Groundwater extraction exceeding 100 m³/day requires CGWB NOC. NGT orders mandate rainwater harvesting for institutions and industries. BRSR Principle 6 requires disclosure of groundwater withdrawal volumes and dependency.
